An order of precedence for livery companies was established by the Lord Mayor in 1515. Those that dealt in the necessities of life, for example wool, cloth, spices, fish, precious metals and wine – namely the Mercers, Grocers, Drapers, Fishmongers, Goldsmiths, Skinners, Tailors, Haberdashers, Salters, Ironmongers, Vintners and Clothworkers became known as Great Twelve or Merchant Companies.
